Members of the United Federation of Planets
See Notes and Considerations for more information.
Aaamazzara
- Category: 2
- Species: Aaamazzarites
- Also known as: Therbians
Humanoid race with large bald heads. They generate their clothing and many other things including furniture from their own mouth, like Terran bees make hives.
These aliens were glimpsed in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. All information, including the double naming (Therbians and Aaamazzarites) are from notes made by Robert Fletcher (costume desinger for TOS and TMP) and Fred Philips (makeup artist for TOS and TMP).
Episode(s): Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Aldebaran III
- Category: 3

Janet and Theodore Wallace performed experiments using carbohydrate compounds to slow the aging of plants on Aldebaran on stardate 3478.2 ("The Deadly Years" [TOS]). Grand Nagus Zek's nephew Belongo was once detained on Aldebaran III by Starfleet ("Past Tense, Part 1" [DS9]). Dr. Dehner transferred from the Aldebaran colony to USS Enterprise NCC-1701 ("Where No Man Has Gone Before" [TOS]).
According to STARTREK.com, Aldebaran III is a "longtime Federation member planet". I do not know where they got that information. It might have come from a script.
Episode(s): "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (TOS), "The Deadly Years" (TOS), "Past Tense, Part I" (DS9)
Alpha Centauri
- Category: 3
- Species: Human
- Admitted: 2161

A colony of Earth ("Twilight" [ENT]). One of the founding members of the Federation in 2161 (Star Trek: Generations).
Finally, in "Twilight" (ENT), we get a firm statement on the status of Alpha Centauri. It is a human colony, and not inhabited by native "Centaurians". From an obscure reference in Picard's album in Star Trek: Generations we learn that the 'newly independent' Alpha Centauri signed the original UFP Constitution.
Episode(s): "Metamorphosis" (TOS), Star Trek: Generations, "Twilight" (ENT)
Altair IV
- Category: 2
- Also known as: Alpha Aquila IV
- Species: Altairians

Carrington Award winner dr. Henri Roget worked at the Central Hospital of Altair IV ("Prophet Motive" [DS9]). The Altairians fought a long interplanetary war that ended in 2267 with the inauguration of a new president on Altair VI. This significantly improved the stability of the quadrant ("Amok Time" [TOS]). Altair III is an uninhabited planet (Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG]).
Altair IV is said to be Federation world in the Encyclopedia. It's also the site of the ancient Krell city and Professor Morbius' home in the classic sci-fi movie "Forbidden Planet".
Episode(s): "Amok Time" (TOS), "Encounter at Farpoint, Part I" (TNG), "Prophet Motive" (DS9)
Althos IV
- Category: 1
- Species: Bzzit Khaht
Bzzit Khaht were seen on the Federation Council in The Voyage Home. The name and planet of this species comes from the FASA Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update. Not canon, but the only widely recognized source for the Star Trek IV aliens.
Episode(s): Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Andoria
- Category: 1
- Also known as: Andor
- Species: Andorians
- Admitted: 2161
The Andorians are a blue humanoid race, with mostly white hair, and two knobbed antennae coming from the top of their heads. Andorians are a passionate and violent race. ("Journey to Babel" [TOS]). Andoria had a history of conflict with the Vulcans before joining the Federation ("The Andorian Incident" [ENT], "Shadows of P'Jem" [ENT], "Cease Fire" [ENT]). The Andorian marriage involves four people. ("Data's Day" [TNG]). Andor was a founding member of the United Federation of Planets (Star Trek: Generations).
Andorians first appeared in "Journey to Babel", which established them as being Federation members. They were glimpsed in ST:TMP, ST:IV, and in several TNG episodes. They have been mentioned (but not seen) in several other TNG and DS9 episodes. The Andorians in The Motion Picture looked quite different from the ones seen in TOS. Their antennae are much smaller and placed differently. Perhaps they are from another part of Andor? Recently, the Andorians have become a recurring race on Enterprise. An obscure historical reference in Picard's family album in Star Trek: Generations confirms the old assumption that Andor was a founding member.
Episode(s): "Journey to Babel" (TOS), "The Gamesters of Triskelion" (TOS), "Whom Gods Destroy" (TOS), "Data's Day" (TNG), "Captain's Holiday" (DS9), "The Offspring" (TNG), "The Survivors" (TNG), "Unification, Part II" (TNG), "Meridian" (DS9), "Prophet Motive" (DS9), "Second Sight" (DS9), "Rules of Acquisition" (DS9), "Tuvix" (VOY), "The Andorian Incident" (ENT), "Shadows of P'Jem" (ENT), "Cease Fire" (ENT), "Azati Prime" (ENT), Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Angel I
- Category: 2
A remote world close to the Romulan Neutral Zone that is home to a matriarchal society. The Federation has targeted Angel I as a potential future member, due to it's vitally strategic location in the Quadrant.
Episode(s): "Angel One" (TNG)
Angosia III
- Category: 2
- Species: Angosians
Angosia applied for membership in 2366. Investigation by USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D revealed that genetically enhanced veteran soldiers from the Tarsian War were unduely kept as prisoners on Lunar V. Membership has been postponed until all soldiers are released and given a fair chance in Angosian society.
Assuming that the Angosian government survived the crisis and joined the Federation several years or so later.
Episode(s): "The Hunted" (TNG)
Antares IV
- Category: 3
- Species: Antarans
Antares IV is home to the Antares Fleet Yards (D9TM). The Antarans have a history of war with Denobula Triaxa ("The Breach" [ENT]).
It might very well be that the Antarans from ENT and the star Antares are unrelated. There have been similar mistakes in recent Star Trek history where writers seem to forget a certain star actually exists (most notably Rigel in "Broken Bow" (ENT)).
Episode(s): "The Breach" (ENT)
Antede III
- Category: 2
- Species: Antedeans
Antede III made a bid for membership in late 2365. The admission conference on Pacifica was disrupted by an Antedean assasin who was part of an anti-membership conspiracy ("Manhunt" [TNG]).
We do not know if Antede III gained membership. It seems likely, since the government itself was not corrupt.
Episode(s): "Manhunt" (TNG)
